Small Bathroom Layout (5×8) Template

The 5×8 bathroom is the most common full-bath footprint in North American homes. There's really only one efficient way to fit a tub, toilet, and sink — this template shows the standard three-fixture layout and the clearances that keep it comfortable.

  • Bathtub/shower (60")
  • Toilet with required side clearance
  • Vanity sink
  • Door placement

Layout tips

Give the toilet 15" from its center to any wall

Code typically requires at least 15 inches from the centerline of the toilet to the nearest wall or fixture, and 21 inches of clear space in front.

Put the tub on the short back wall

A standard tub is 60 inches — exactly the width of a 5-foot bathroom — so it slots cleanly across the back wall and leaves the long wall for the toilet and vanity.

Swing the door against the vanity

Hang the door so it opens toward the sink, not the toilet, to avoid the door hitting someone seated and to keep the entry feeling open.
